Locating Your Model Number

The model number of a Briggs & Stratton engine is 11 or 12 digits, and 6 or 7 digits that is stamped into metal directly on the engine. Some Briggs & Stratton equipment models include a cover or “shroud,” which come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. Regardless of the cover, the model number will be in one of the following locations, per equipment type.

Riding Lawn Mower Engines


On the Valve Cover – Stamped on the metal plate over the overhead valve (OHV). May need a flashlight to properly view model number.


Valve Cover variations.

On Top of Blower Housing – Stamped on aluminum tag, next to rotating screen. May need a flashlight to properly view model number.


Push Mower Engines

Above the Spark Plug. May need a flashlight to properly view model number.

On the Front of the Engine – Stamped on a metal plate in between the overhead valve (OHV) cover and the air filter.

Stamped on the sheet metal above the (right or left side of engine).
